Why The Breadline & Soup Kitchen Name?
Breadlines and soup kitchens were started during The Great Depression, 1929 - 1939, and were run by organizations and charities like the Red Cross. They were a method of feeding needy people and fed thousands of people a day.
My great grandparents and their children immigrated from Serbia to the United States during the Austro-Hungarian war declared on the Kingdom of Serbia in 1914. They settled in Philadelphia, raised their children and opened a luncheonette (pictured below.) My grandfather (pictured as a child with my great grandparents) became an accomplished chef, baker and chocolatier. I learned a lot of my baking skills from him.
My grandfather went on to open his own seafood restaurant and also sold baked goods and chocolates. My mom is pictured in front of the restaurant. Also pictured is my wedding cake made by him in 1971.
My mother was also an accomplished home cook and loved to entertain, so cooking and baking are in my blood. The pandemic reminded me of my great grandparents surviving the depression and the way our country pulled together then and during COVID-19.
If you order soup from me, please know that 10% of my profits will go to feed those in need in our community through our local food shelves.
